Exam Format:
Exam Weight Breakdown:
| Category | Weight | Approx. Questions | Study Hour |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public Safety & Special Construction | 31% | ~25 | Hour 1 |
| Wall Construction and Coverings | 21% | ~17 | Hour 2 |
| Building Planning | 20% | ~16 | Hour 2-3 |
| Footings and Foundations | 8% | ~6 | Hour 3 |
| Floor Construction | 8% | ~6 | Hour 3-4 |
| Roof/Ceiling Construction | 6% | ~5 | Hour 4 |
| General Administration | 6% | ~5 | Hour 4 |
Tab Color Strategy:
This is the largest exam category. It covers means of egress, interior finishes, safety glazing, accessibility, and fire protection systems. Master Chapter 10 (Means of Egress) first — it accounts for roughly half of this category.
This is one of the most-referenced tables on the exam. Tab it prominently.
| Function of Space | Load Factor (sq ft/person) | Gross/Net |
|---|---|---|
| Assembly - Standing space | 5 | net |
| Assembly - Concentrated (chairs only, no tables) | 7 | net |
| Assembly - Unconcentrated (tables and chairs) | 15 | net |
| Assembly - Fixed seats | Number of fixed seats | — |
| Business areas | 150 | gross |
| Educational - Classroom | 20 | net |
| Day care | 35 | net |
| Mercantile | 60 | gross |
| Industrial | 100 | gross |
| Residential | 200 | gross |
| Storage / Warehouse | 500 | gross |
| Mechanical equipment rooms | 300 | gross |
Worked Example — Occupant Load Calculation:
A two-story building has a ground floor with 3,000 sq ft of retail space and 1,500 sq ft of office space, plus a second floor with 2,000 sq ft of office space.
Exam trap: Business uses 150 gross (NOT 100). Mercantile uses 60 gross for all floors per 2021 IBC Table 1004.5. (Note: Pre-2021 IBC editions used a 30/60 split; the 2021 IBC consolidates to a single 60 gross entry.)
| Occupant Load | Minimum Exits |
|---|---|
| 1-500 | 2 |
| 501-1,000 | 3 |
| Over 1,000 | 4 |
Common Test Question: A restaurant with an occupant load of 498 requires how many exits?
Answer: 2 exits. The threshold for 3 exits is 501. [IBC Table 1006.3.3]
| Occupancy Group | Without Sprinklers | With Sprinklers |
|---|---|---|
| A, E, F-1, M, R, S-1 | 200 ft | 250 ft |
| B | 200 ft | 300 ft |
| F-2, S-2, U | 300 ft | 400 ft |
| H-1 | Not Permitted | 75 ft |
| H-2 | Not Permitted | 100 ft |
| H-3 | Not Permitted | 150 ft |
| I-2, I-3 | Not Permitted | 200 ft |
Common Test Question: What is the maximum exit access travel distance in a sprinklered Group B office building?
Answer: 300 feet. [IBC Table 1017.2]
